Alf Ramsey, 22 January 1920 – 28 April 1999

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA  On this day 14 years ago, Sir Alf Ramsey died at his home in Ipswich. He had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for many years.

He took Ipswich Town Football Club from the Third Division to become champions of the Football League in 1962 and, of course, in 1966 he became the only manager of the England national side to win the World Cup.

He was one of the greatest ever managers in English football – and he was ours.

RIP, Alf.

Coincidentally it is 51 years ago today that Ipswich Town won the Football League championship ( or Premier League (spit) as it is now known).which was of course Sir Alf’s crowning achievement at Ipswich. Read all about it in my book ‘Ipswich Town Champions 1961/62’ published by the History Press
